Deep-Set Quake Felt Across Regions, Causes Limited Injuries and Structural Damage
Early Sunday, a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru, causing structural damage and blocking roads across several areas. The tremor, recorded at a depth of 112 kilometers (70 miles), was centered in the Amazon region, approximately 42 kilometers (26 miles) north-northwest of Barranca.
The earthquake, which struck at 5:52 a.m. local time, caused part of a 16th-century church in La Jalca district to collapse, resulting in minor injuries to three people, as reported by Mayor Walter Culqui. Several highways in the Amazonas and Cajamarca regions were blocked by rubble, and the quake’s tremors reached as far as Lima, nearly 800 kilometers (500 miles) away, prompting alarm among residents.
Neighboring Ecuador also experienced the quake’s effects, with partial damage reported to a church in the Loja municipality. Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Peru frequently experiences earthquakes due to high seismic activity in the region.
