Airborne Birth on U.S. Military Plane Saves Life of Afghan Mother
A baby girl, born during the evacuation from Afghanistan, was named “Reach” after the call sign of the U.S. military plane she was delivered on. The child’s mother, an Afghan citizen, went into labor on August 21 while being flown from Qatar to a U.S. military base in Germany. As the plane approached the Ramstein air force base, military medics helped her deliver the baby in the cargo hold. To assist with the birth, the plane’s commander reduced altitude to increase air pressure, which stabilized the mother’s condition and helped save her life.
