California College Employee Who Killed Retired Administrator Is Sentenced to Life

Chuyen Van Vo stabbed Steven Shek Keung Chan more than 30 times in the 2019 attack on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.

Chuyen Van Vo, a former employee of California State University, Fullerton, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday after pleading guilty to the murder of his former boss, Steven Shek Keung Chan. The murder occurred on August 19, 2019, on the Cal State Fullerton campus.

Vo, now 55, fatally stabbed Chan, a retired college administrator who had returned to work as a consultant, more than 30 times. Prosecutors believe the motive for the brutal attack stemmed from Chan’s discovery that Vo had embezzled over $200,000 from the university by submitting fake tutoring invoices.

The stabbing took place around 8:30 a.m. in a campus parking lot. Following the attack, Vo fled the scene, sparking a manhunt. He was apprehended two days later and later admitted to both the murder and grand theft by embezzlement.

At his sentencing, the court highlighted the shocking nature of the crime, given the victim’s role as a trusted administrator at the university. The case has drawn significant attention to workplace violence and embezzlement within educational institutions.

Prosecutors confirmed that Vo’s sentencing would ensure he would spend the rest of his life in prison for the senseless and violent crime.
