Chinese New Year 2022: Celebrating the Year of the Tiger

Festivities Mark Return of Family Gatherings as Travel Restrictions Ease

The Chinese New Year, celebrated on Tuesday, 1 February 2022, ushers in the Year of the Tiger. Traditionally, the Chinese community worldwide celebrates by decorating homes in red—symbolizing good fortune—and attending parades, all while wishing for a prosperous year ahead.

Although the annual Chinese New Year parade in Trafalgar Square has been canceled for the second consecutive year due to the ongoing pandemic, many families are excited to reunite and celebrate together. After two years of forced isolation due to travel restrictions, people are once again able to return to their hometowns and countries to observe the holiday.

The date of Chinese New Year varies each year, based on the lunisolar Chinese calendar, and this year marks the first day of the Spring Festival. As travel restrictions ease in many countries, including the UK, celebrations are set to be more vibrant and inclusive than in recent years.
