Donald Trump and the politics of retribution

After his emphatic victory in the Iowa Republican primary, the former president believes he is destined for a second term. What can stop him?

Donald Trump’s favorite Hollywood icon is Sylvester Stallone. Throughout his campaign stops, 2024 “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) merchandise is prominently displayed—flags, posters, and T-shirts featuring the 77-year-old Trump depicted as the indomitable Rambo, holding a bazooka with the slogan, “No Man, no Woman, no Commie can stump him.” Another version shows Trump’s face on the muscular body of Stallone’s iconic boxing character, Rocky. Trump has even shared the meme on his social media, embracing the comparison with pride.

The appeal of these images lies in their embodiment of Trump’s defiant, resilient campaign persona—one that echoes the words of Rocky: “It ain’t how hard you hit… it’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” This narrative of perseverance, especially after the controversial 2020 election loss, has become central to his identity. Trump channels his bitterness and frustration from that defeat into his campaign, positioning himself as a political underdog eager for vengeance. This “anger-driven” spectacle—dubbed “angertainment”—has captured the attention of many Americans, eager for the return of a president who promises to fight back against perceived injustices.

Trump’s Iowa victory has only amplified this narrative, reinforcing his belief that he is destined for a second term. His supporters see him as the embodiment of someone who refuses to be defeated, no matter the odds or the attacks against him. The former president has effectively used his grievances and controversies, including legal battles, as fuel for his campaign, casting himself as a champion of the people against the elite establishment.

This retribution narrative has resonated deeply with a segment of American voters, who view Trump’s combative rhetoric and promises of retribution as a rallying cry. It fits neatly into the broader populist movement, which thrives on anger, division, and a desire to “take back” what they believe has been unfairly lost. Yet, while his political base grows increasingly fervent, the question remains: can anything stop Trump’s seemingly unstoppable momentum?

As the 2024 race unfolds, Trump’s message of revenge, combined with his ability to galvanize his supporters, makes him a formidable force in American politics. However, whether this narrative will translate into a successful second term is still uncertain, with challenges from both within the Republican Party and the broader political landscape looming on the horizon.
