Ohio K-9 Officer on Leave After Police Dog Appears to Attack Compliant Man

Officer Nicholas Casto is under investigation following a video that appears to show his K-9 attacking a subdued man after a traffic stop.

A K-9 officer from Canton, Ohio, identified as Nicholas Casto, has been placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate an incident where his police dog allegedly attacked a man lying on his stomach, with his hands positioned behind his back. Body camera footage from Thursday’s incident shows the dog engaging with the restrained man, prompting concern within the community.

The incident unfolded following a routine traffic stop. Canton police reportedly stopped the vehicle for a “sudden turn” towards the curb and discovered an open container of liquor inside. A subsequent search revealed a firearm under one of the car seats, leading officers to detain both the driver and a passenger.

As events progressed, a crowd gathered at the scene, becoming increasingly agitated, according to a police report. Officers instructed bystanders to disperse, but tensions rose when two men in the crowd allegedly threatened the police dog.

Officer Casto, who managed the K-9, asserted that one of the men had been sufficiently warned and suggested that he be arrested. However, this escalated into a situation where the K-9 was seemingly directed towards the restrained man, sparking concerns about appropriate use of force.

In response to the public’s reaction and the footage, Canton Mayor Christian Turner issued a statement expressing a commitment to transparency and assuring the community that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. Mayor Turner acknowledged that the incident raised significant questions, and he pledged that his office would release further information as the investigation proceeds.

This event adds to the ongoing discussion about police practices, particularly concerning K-9 units and their handlers’ responsibilities.
