Pope Francis Hospitalised with Respiratory Infection, Weekend Events Cancelled

Ongoing Health Concerns Delay Vatican’s Jubilee Celebrations

The Vatican has called off several weekend events as Pope Francis continues his recovery from a respiratory infection at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on Friday after his bronchitis symptoms worsened, leading to concerns over his participation in upcoming Holy Year events.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis is in “fair” condition but is being treated for a complex polymicrobial respiratory tract infection. This involves a mix of viruses, bacteria, and possibly other microorganisms. No specific timeline has been provided for his discharge, with doctors recommending an extended hospital stay to ensure effective treatment.

Impact on Jubilee Celebrations
The cancellations have disrupted preparations for the once-in-a-quarter-century Jubilee, an event expected to attract 30 million pilgrims to Rome throughout 2025. This weekend’s gatherings, particularly those focused on deacons preparing for priesthood, have been affected. A planned papal audience on Saturday and an ordination Mass on Sunday were cancelled. Instead, the Jubilee’s organising archbishop will lead the Mass.

This follows a similar situation last weekend when a cardinal presided over a Mass for visiting artists in place of the Pope. The next significant Jubilee events, scheduled for 8-9 March and dedicated to volunteers, are now uncertain due to Pope Francis’ health situation.

Ongoing Health Challenges
Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having had part of one lung removed following a pulmonary infection in his youth. This has made him more susceptible to bronchitis, particularly during the winter months. Despite medical advice, he continued his demanding schedule, including presiding over an outdoor Jubilee Mass for the armed forces on 9 February, even while struggling to breathe.

His current hospital stay has already exceeded the duration of his 2023 hospitalisation for pneumonia, raising concerns about his recovery timeline. Vatican officials have acknowledged that the Pope is known for pushing his physical limits, even when advised to rest.

Uncertainty Ahead
The situation has cast doubt on the Pope’s participation in future Holy Year events. The Vatican has not provided updates on his release or any adjustments to the Jubilee calendar. For now, the Catholic community remains hopeful for his swift recovery as the world watches closely.
