Red River in Buenos Aires Suburb Sparks Concern Over Pollution

The unusual colour change in the Sarandi watercourse raises alarms among locals, with fears of contamination.

A river in a Buenos Aires suburb, Argentina, has turned an alarming shade of red, causing concern among local residents who fear it could be a sign of contamination. The Sarandi watercourse, which flows into the Rio de la Plata estuary, is the latest to experience such a dramatic shift in colour. Footage and images have captured the striking transformation, which is not a new occurrence for the area.

According to reports from local media, this is not the first time the water has changed hue. Residents have reported seeing the water in various shades over the years, including grey, green, violet, and even brown. “I’ve lived here my whole life. Today, the water is red. It’s been many colours—grey, green, violet, bluish… very brown,” one concerned resident shared with La Nacion.

Another local resident recalled another disturbing phenomenon, stating: “On other days, there’s a thick yellow layer on top of the water that hardens and has an acidic smell.”

Local authorities have responded to the situation by visiting the site to collect water samples for further analysis. The regional environment ministry assured La Nacion that these samples will be tested in order to determine the cause of the discolouration and assess any potential risks.
