Rep. George Santos faces federal charges, sources say

The Republican congressman is at the center of a number of probes into his finances and other issues.

Rep. George Santos, the Republican congressman from New York, has been charged with federal offenses, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. These charges mark a significant escalation in a series of investigations that have surrounded Santos since before he assumed office.

Sources confirm that Santos, who was seen in the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, is expected to appear in court at the Long Island Federal Courthouse in Central Islip, New York, on Wednesday. The exact nature of the charges has not yet been publicly disclosed, as no court documents have been released.

The congressman has been under intense legal and political scrutiny, particularly after he admitted to fabricating parts of his personal background during his campaign. Santos is also the subject of various investigations into his financial activities, including potential irregularities in his financial disclosures and the loans he made to his congressional campaign.

In December, federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York opened an investigation into Santos’ finances. The inquiry focuses on discrepancies in his financial disclosures and the possible misuse of campaign funds. Santos and his legal team have yet to respond to requests for comment on the charges, and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York has declined to comment publicly.

This development comes amid growing pressure for Santos to resign from Congress, with both political opponents and some within his own party calling for his departure due to the ongoing legal challenges and allegations of dishonesty. The outcome of these federal charges could have significant implications for Santos’ political career and the broader Republican Party.
