A Week of Tributes Celebrates Tutu’s Impact on Racial and LGBT Rights
South Africa has arranged a series of commemorative events to honor Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s lifelong commitment to social justice following his passing at age 90. Beginning on Monday, Dec. 27, church bells across the country will ring daily for 10 minutes at noon, with citizens encouraged to pause in reflection of Tutu’s profound impact on both the anti-apartheid and LGBT rights movements.
The tribute week commenced with President Cyril Ramaphosa visiting Tutu’s family at their home in Milnerton, Cape Town, extending condolences to his widow, Leah, and honoring the Arch’s legacy. The memorial services and events throughout the week will provide the nation with opportunities to celebrate Tutu’s remarkable contributions to a more inclusive South Africa.
