Sweden Declares Pandemic Over as It Lifts Remaining Covid Restrictions

Amid High Healthcare Pressure, Sweden Ends Restrictions and Halts Most Testing

Sweden has officially lifted nearly all of its pandemic-related restrictions and ceased most Covid testing, marking a significant shift in its approach to managing the virus. Despite ongoing strain on the healthcare system, the government, which opted for a voluntary strategy rather than lockdowns throughout the pandemic, is declaring the crisis over.

Health Minister Lena Hallengren made the announcement on Wednesday, citing the protective effect of vaccines and the less severe nature of the Omicron variant in reducing severe illness and death. This move has raised concerns among some scientists who urge caution, stressing that more patience is needed as the healthcare system continues to face challenges.

Sweden’s decision signals a pivot towards living with the virus, though it remains to be seen if other nations will follow suit in fully easing restrictions.
