Commemorations on 25 November Urge Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls
On 25 November, communities worldwide observe White Ribbon Day alongside the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Both initiatives focus on heightening awareness and urging action to combat violence against women and girls globally. According to Amnesty International UK, nearly one-third of women who have been in relationships have endured physical or sexual violence from a partner, though only 24% of domestic violence incidents are reported, as noted by Women’s Aid.
White Ribbon Day was established in 1991 in Ontario, Canada, as a movement of boys and men standing against violence towards women. The initiative began following the 1989 École Polytechnique Massacre, where 14 women were tragically killed. Today, the White Ribbon Campaign encourages men in over 60 countries to wear white ribbons as a pledge against gender-based violence.
Coinciding with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, White Ribbon Day underscores the need for a unified global response to protect the rights and safety of women and girls.
