Chicago Apartment Explosion Leaves Several Injured and Building Heavily Damaged

Blast tears through top floor, injuring at least six and prompting extensive rescue efforts.

An explosion struck the upper floor of a Chicago apartment building in the South Austin neighborhood on Tuesday morning, leaving at least six people injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. The blast hit the three-story, 36-unit building around 9:30 a.m., leading the Chicago Fire Department to deploy over ten ambulances and request additional personnel to search the structure for anyone trapped.

Images shared by the Fire Department show severe damage, with much of the building’s top floor demolished. Debris, including bricks and structural fragments, fell onto the street below, crushing one vehicle and severely damaging two others on Chicago’s West Side.
