Republican megadonor fuels pro-RFK Jr. super PAC

A majority of the super PAC’s funds have come from businessman Timothy Mellon, who previously spent millions backing former President Donald Trump.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign has received a significant financial boost, thanks to a super PAC supported by prominent GOP megadonor Timothy Mellon. Mellon, a wealthy businessman from Wyoming, donated $5 million to the American Values 2024 super PAC during the first half of 2023, according to Federal Election Commission filings. This contribution accounts for the majority of the $9.8 million raised by the PAC.

Mellon is no stranger to political giving, having previously contributed millions to Republican candidates and causes, including a massive $20 million donation to super PACs supporting former President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election bid. In a statement, Mellon expressed his belief that Kennedy’s bipartisan support indicated his potential to unite the country and win the general election.

While Mellon’s donation has drawn attention, the super PAC has also received substantial backing from other sources. Gavin de Becker, a security specialist known for his investigation into the National Enquirer’s dealings with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, contributed $4.7 million. Despite de Becker’s Democratic alignment, he has previously supported GOP candidates, such as Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson.

Kennedy, who launched his campaign in April, has positioned himself as a candidate with broad appeal across political divides. His super PAC’s strong financial backing highlights the growing support for his long-shot presidential bid.
