Denmark recalls Samyang ramen products, warning that their high capsaicin levels could pose health risks.
Samyang, a South Korean noodle brand famous for its extra-spicy ramen, has gained a global following online, thanks to popular mukbang videos and the viral “spicy noodle challenge.” However, Denmark recently issued a recall on three of Samyang’s ramen products, cautioning that their capsaicin levels could be dangerous.
The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration highlighted that the high capsaicin content in Samyang’s Buldak 3x Spicy & Hot Chicken, 2x Spicy & Hot Chicken, and Hot Chicken Stew noodles may carry a risk of poisoning. Capsaicin, the spicy compound in chili peppers, is known to cause intense burning sensations and can impact sensitive consumers.
Samyang responded, noting that the recall stemmed from the products’ heat levels rather than quality concerns. They added that there are no clear EU regulations governing capsaicin limits in food and promised to cooperate with Danish authorities to address the recall.
While some social media users enjoy the extreme spice, others acknowledge its strength. On TikTok, some fans even document their efforts to manage the heat—one user reaching for milk after tasting the 3x Spicy flavor, and another prepping with antacids before eating.
The recall has sparked online discussions, with fans defending Samyang’s fiery ramen as a beloved challenge, while others question if the spice levels have gone too far.
