Scotland faces potential disruptions during Hogmanay celebrations as “wet and windy” weather is expected.
The UK is set to experience dreary, drizzly conditions in the coming days, with a particularly wet and windy New Year’s Eve forecast, according to the Met Office.
Starting this Friday, light, patchy rain is anticipated in northern and western Scotland, although the showers won’t be particularly heavy. Mild temperatures, similar to those experienced on Boxing Day, are expected across the country. Cloud cover and patchy drizzle will affect areas such as western Wales and south-western England. However, the north-east of England, particularly Aberdeenshire, will enjoy the brightest weather, with some sunshine and temperatures ranging from 10°C to 12°C.
Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge highlighted that if you’re hoping for clearer skies, the north-east seems to be the best option in the coming days, while much of the rest of the country will remain under grey, overcast conditions.
The weekend will bring slightly stronger winds, with conditions becoming wetter and windier across Scotland. Northern Scotland will experience showers due to low-pressure systems, while the southern parts of the UK will see cloudy weather, with occasional breaks in the cloud on Sunday. Temperatures will be a touch cooler over the weekend, with highs expected to range between 9°C and 11°C, a dip from earlier in the week’s 11°C to 13°C.
Despite the milder temperatures, frost is unlikely in the coming days, as overnight temperatures remain relatively warm.
Looking ahead to the New Year, Scotland, in particular, is set to face “quite wet and quite windy” conditions, which may cause disruptions to Hogmanay celebrations. Snow is also possible on both high and low ground. Partridge cautioned that the weather on New Year’s Eve could cause significant disruptions, especially in Scotland, a region renowned for its enthusiastic celebrations.
